Khoona v4 13.5 vs Taboo 15m as LW kite

Postby jumarcil » Tue Dec 13, 2011 8:19 am

I had not tried a Kahoona since V1. I had the chance to have a 9.5 V4 demo for a week in Cuba and wow that kite sure has a lot of low-end. It made me think that the 13.5 Kahoona would probably be a better light wind kite than my 15m Taboo. What do you guys think.

I would wind up with an 8m Taboo, 10m Ts and a 13.5 Kahoona. 3 kite quiver.

I now have an 8m taboo , 10m TS, 12m and 15m taboo. (i would also sell my 12m taboo since it is too close with the 10m ts).

Good move ?

I prefer the way the Taboo feels on the bar, but i doubt there is much between them in low end if you use a larger board. 8-10-13.5 seems a good spread.

I've ridden the 15 ts and 13.5 kahoona back to back several times and prefer the 15 ts all day long. In my opinion it has a lot more power and an excellent upper wind range.

The kahoona is a light feeling kite, super forgiving and generates nice floaty jumps. It is super easy to fly and you almost forget the kite is even there.

However, it does not power through transitions the way the TS does. I like to aggressively edge against the kite and often found myself killing the power of the Kahoona. I prefer to fly my kite through the wind window and constantly trim to get the power I desire, or as I said edge hard against the kite to rein it in. The kahoona had a set it and forget it feel that limited its performance to me.

The TS on the other hand had so many options due to the ability to manipulate the power and feel of the kite by trimming it. I was able to just destroy gust with the depower and then trim it in to generate additional power when gust die down. It made for a consistent ride despite wind changes.

I also preferred the pop of the TS over the float of the kahoona. Again the jumps on the TS depended on how far you sent it, the load you put into the lines and how you flew it once in the air. The kahoona was an easy, consistent jumper that lacked the performance I like.

And as far as a light wind kite. The 13.5 kahoona doesn't even come close to the 15 ts in my opinion. The speed on each kite was comparable, but again the power was not. I was riding the kahoona fully powered and struggling in lulls while only half powered with the 15 ts.

For light wind I hope you went with a TS.

Finally sold all my taboos and went with the TS; I ordered an 8m + 15m TS to go with the 10m. I am also getting a demo TS 12m tomorrow; cant wait to try it.

That is the prefect quiver in my mind!! I have a 7.5 V4 kahoona, 12 M ts and 15 M ts. I'm wondering if there will be a gap between the 12 ts and 7.5 Kahoona. I'd like to here how the 15 ts and 10 ts work together. Like maybe you wouldn't even need a 12 ts.

Actually I haven't received the TS 8m and 15m yet. So now I ride the 10m and my Dealer lent me a 12m ts + an 8m Switchblade 8m 2012 until I receive my kites. In the winter I dont really need the 15 T; when the wind is light I use my 21m Speed 3.

Now for the 12m TS which I received yesterday; it really is a sweet kite. I used it in really gusty wind before using my 10m TS and I found it really similar to the 10m; only more powerful and slower (as expected.)

I doubt that there will be a problem between the 10m and the 15m though. I can use my 10m from 13 or 14 knots to the upper twenties (in knots). So the 15 can be use from 9 to 22; that gives a nice overlap. gfe

There is a 1,5 m2 diffence in the kites, so not comparable.

Not so sure about that; the Kahoona 9.5 V4 has pretty much the same low end as last year taboo 12m ... This year's 10m TS has also more low end than last year 12m taboo.

A Kahoona 13.5 V3 or V4 has more low end than last year 15m Taboo. So that is why I was asking ?

They are really different kite as the TS 15m is a high aspect kite and the V4 is not. The v4 on the other hand is a pretty grunty kite with better relaunch.

I have ordered a 15m TS but the 13.5 could also have done a good job and the TS is 400$ more expensive than the Kahoona.
