Just my 2 cents.

I've been kiting since '99 and teaching since 2000. Flown just about every kite on the market and have never seen a strut just rip away from the canopy without the kite having been slammed hard straight downwind. This happens with any kite as the force of impact has to go somewhere. Usually the canopy. I'm not saying it is impossible but would be the first I ever heard of this. It could have been caused earlier causing a small tear that he didn't realise and then ripped while flying.

Thanks sq. Wasn't at all meant to be a joke, sorry for the misunderstanding. I'm with Noel on this one. I have been riding Best for a number of years now and never have seen this happen without having the kite slammed down or eaten by a wave. That is what was so shocking to me. This kid is still pretty new so he isn't pulling any huge airs or unhooked moves just riding. It looked like the kite tore off the strut as he was launching the kite back up from the edge of the window after taking a nose dive with the board in no way having slammed the kite down.

In my experience of seeing trashed and purposefully trashing kites, the only way to do this is after a serious impact.

It might not be the even be the same day, but once the canopy fabric has lost its integrity it will go eventually.

But as i said, send the big jpgs in and i'll see what it looks like, it's easy to tell how these things have happened with the evidence in front of you.

Impact Tear

Postby BigD » Fri Aug 24, 2007 12:40 pm

It is an impact tear. This is what happens when a kite is crashed leading edge down on the water or land at high velocity. I've seen it happen many times with other kites not just Best. Good luck with that.
It's not the shirt that makes me look fat....

I agree, it's obvious this kite was crashed hard into the water. That's exactly what happens. Seen kites rip completely in two, so this really isn't bad compared to some other hot crashes I've seen.

I saw a waroo (07) do the same thing in the same spot when crashed at full power into the water.
