red line bar swivel doesnt work

Postby nightwalker » Wed Oct 07, 2009 4:22 pm

i am kiting with the kahoona 9.5 for a week now in Cumbuco, Brazil.
i am very frustrated from the swivel of the front lines - it doesnt help at all !
after every day i need to spent lots of time untangeling the front lines.
so i am asking - what is the swivel for if not to privent this situation?
on my previous kite (fone bandit dos) the swivel worked perfectly, and i didnt have to worry at all about the front lines.
now with the kahoona its a pain....
so does anybody know how to solve or overcome this problem ?

sometimes it swivels, most of the time it doesnt.
use drylube, that helps.
i also noticed that when the redline is twisted the lines keep tangle up.
i think it swivels (or not) the same as cabrinha and f-one if i see my friends.
i just rotate the other way

cabrinha IDS and redline are essentially the same thing down to the swivel and it doesn't work especially well for either company

i notice that cabrinha now has a 'pro kit' that removes the IDS line and puts the swivel on the chicken loop and makes it look more like a 2009 Best bar with handles for the front lines

http://www.cabrinhakites.com/index.php? ... Itemid=350

my personal observation is that swivels are doomed to failure unless you can reach them or you connect them somehow to the rear lines

so in my opinion the current best solution would be to put the swivel below where you clip into the redline ala cabrinha and have the red line connect to a single front line ala slingshot rev

How about we just have the top of the chickenloop on a swivel, all three lines go into the top, the depower lines are captive there and the centreline safety goes through to the leash point, when you want to un-swivel just turn the top part of the CL...

Simples.

yes, that seems to be solution that will give a leash below the bar and allow you to spin the bar -

i still advocate a single front line depower on the safety line ala slingshot Rev

if i go to the safety line (punched out of the chicken loop), i want my kite down, i want it over with and i want to use that one line to get to the kite

so i am landing, or something went wrong or i am self rescuing - trying to work your way to a kite using two front lines is not going to work

if you try to self land by releasing to the two front lines and it doesn't land leading edge down, you need to grab a single front line to flip it over - or if it tumbles back down wind, you are stuck with two power lines on the kite

yes you have the #2 handles but that is not fast enough and if you did release the chicken loop you have to get back to the bar

single front line safety below the bar with swivel on the chicken loop so it can be unspun by hand - :finga:

just my humble suggestion

that's all I ask....

if done right you should be able to leash to either side on one single line or both front lines

tight lines

Just want to ad somthing to this thread that might be of interest.
The swivels look like Sampo swivels. I've had the same problems with mine, locking solid while in use so I emailed sampo to ask for some maintenance advise.
This is their reply

"We have always felt, that adding oil will help hold in dirt. You could try
boiling them in soap, and water. This may help expel what ever is in there.
If you see any nickel, or brass filings, they are shot".

I've used oil and WD40 to try and keep it working but haven't tryed this yet.
Will let you know how it goes :!:
Make it sing!!

this swivel has been around for a long time and i had some luck with a teflon lube that would leave a dry film

i just think being around sand and salt water dooms them to fail and the solution is to either get more torque on them or be able to reach them

on solution to more torque would be to make the lines warp around something when they twist or you could make the lines a larger diameter where they cross

i actually just cut my red line swivel off leaving only a ring because they were getting rusty and that has been a warning sign to me in the past with metal parts
